Local Soups

gozo local soups - traditional food

Soups are a common dish on the island of Gozo. Nowadays, these options are enjoyed as starters. However, in the past the local soups were the daily meal.

Also known as vegetable soup, it was almost a daily occurrence. As most peasants were farmers, the Gozitan housewife was an expert in preparing the minestra from their own produce.

Aljotta is the Maltese name for fish soup. Fishing was a main food industry. Although not as favored as the minestra, still, the Aljotta is a healthy dish with a strong fish taste.

This is a traditional option which has been passed on through the generations. Again, not very common today, this particular soup includes eggs and local fresh goat cheese.

Ful biz-zibeg is a centuries old recipe that my ancestors used to prepare often. The main ingredient is the soybean. A very healthy option but not much enjoyed nowadays.
