Gozo Trekking Routes

Gozo is at heart to many trekking enthusiast. The island promises excellent trekking routes around its rocky shores. These are far from crowded urban places, and give you time for self reflection.

Some inland routes pass through valleys between villages. These provide some green scenery during the winter season. However, the most popular routes are those which go around the coast of Gozo. The official routes are marked with red dots. However, it is almost impossible to get lost on Gozo 🙂

The Gozitan coast can be divided into four official coastal routes; South Trek, West Trek, North Trek, and East Trek. The best time of the year to walk these routes are the mid season and winter, from February to April, and September to December. I personally prefer the months of March and April, as the air will still be a bit chilly and the fields covered with green grass from the winter rain.

Tips for Trekking

All routes are of medium difficulty and no professional training is required beforehand. However, I suggest that you exercise before attempting to trek the whole island. This is because at some points, the terrain gets rough. Also, do expect some uphill and downhill trekking.

Do plan your route from the day before, and the duration you expect to walk. Keep in mind that during the winter season the sun sets early. After sunset, these routes get pitch black and it will be difficult to get back to your accommodation. Do remember that some routes are about 20 to 30 minutes away from the nearest village

Fuel your body with energy from healthy food. Stay away from heavy dishes. Also, carry some snacks with you. Plenty of water is an asset, and it is vital during the warm season.

The south coastal trek is one of the most popular routes. This is because it can be started from Mgarr ferry terminal. The route passes through the south coast of the island. Several beaches are found along the way where you can stay for a brief rest.

For those interested in archaeology, the West route may be of interest. Near the starting part of the route, at Sanap Cliffs, you may manage to find Mramma Temple, an archeological site that has not been excavated yet. Along the route you can also visit the Punic Temple at Ras il-Wardija.

The north part of the island is my favorite walking route. You will pass along many points of interests and beaches. Some rock formations and caves can be seen near Wied il-Mielah. Plan some extra time to enjoy the scenery.

The East route is the most quiet of them all. For solo trekkers, this walk helps you to make some self reflection. You have the opportunity to visit Tal-Mixta Cave along the way. The terrain may get rough at time. Also, look out to keep a distance from the quarries in the area. This route provides extraordinary views of the channel and Comino island
