West Trekking Route

a coastal cliff edge near Xlendi on Gozo island

The west part of the island provides a unique experience. The coast around this part has very few beaches. However, the terrain is still very pristine with little impact from people.

Next to Sanap Cliff is the archaeological site of Mramma Temple. Next to it you may find some Dolmens as well. Be careful following the route towards Xlendi as at times the path gets near the sharp cliff edge. I must admit that children have to be supervised in this location. One has to be cautions during days with strong winds.

Passing near the Xlendi Watch Tower, you have to cross over the short Roman bridge to get to the village. There you can find some refreshments before continuing your walk. Up the road and turning left takes you to Lunzjata valley. Keep going westward leaving Kercem village behind you.

Your next point of reference is Ghadira ta’ San Raflu. This is a small natural fresh water pond. Ducks and turtles nest in the bushes that crowd around the pond. Taking the narrow path to the left, gives you the opportunity to visit the Punic Temple in Ras il-Wardija.

Dwejra area is your last destination for this route. As this is the most westward point of the island, it is the last part which gets light after sunset. There is plenty to see in this area. The west trekking route is one of the longest to walk, so do pace your walking and divide it into small sections.
