Wardija Punic Temple

a Punic Temple made inside rock

This particular temple is found on Ras il-Wardija promontory in the limits of San Lawrenz village. The temple is from the Punic period located near a remote cliff edge.

This site consists of a Punic Roman Sanctuary dated 1500 BC. During the 3rd century BC it has been converted into a religious complex, a nymphaeum. During the Roman period it was also used as a Christian place of worship. This is clearly indicated by the carved crosses on the walls.

The main structure on site is a large rectangular chamber hewed into the rock. Inside the chamber you will find a number of niches. A water reservoir and a bell shaped well are also present, which will be full of water during the winter season.

Some remains of an external masonry and altar are also present. It is a quiet and remote place with a positive energy. Also, an excellent location to view the sunset with your loved ones. You will need to walk along the West Trekking route to reach the site. The route goes adjacent to sharp cliff drops and it is not ideal for young children.
