Valentines in Gozo

a Valentines sign on the island of Gozo

Gozo is frequently referred to as the island of love and romance. Hence, the February festivity of Valentine’s day is widely celebrated, especially among the young generation. It is common for international visitors to find a partner during their visit to Gozo.

History

Mentioned also in Greek mythology, the island of Gozo played an important part in Homer’s Odyssey. During his voyage, Odysseus found himself on Gozo, where he was greeted by the nymph Calypso, daughter of Titan Atlas. As the legend goes, Calypso deceived Odysseus into loving her for seven years. It was the pure love that Odysseus had in his heart for his family that helped him to get away and continue his trip.

Present

The island gets decorated for the occasion and you will see love symbols along the main roads. Victoria’s natural park, the Villa Rundle, takes the heavy ornaments with love symbols, lights, and a photo stand. It is common to see couples walking around the park in the evening. On Valentine’s day lovers and close friends exchange gifts and sweets. The local bakeries produce lovely sweets for the awaited occasion.
