Ta’ Pinu Shrine is a very particular church. This is a must visit place and you should add it to your list.

Contrary to most of the other churches, Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary is not found in the middle of a village. Instead it is located in a natural area near t’Ghammar Hill.

The Roman Catholic Basilica is bare of precious material present in other churches. The beauty of the building lay in the craftsmanship of the local people. Their expert skill in crafting limestone decorates the interior of this monumental church. The bell tower was constructed many years layer. I can still remember my uncle being one of the men placing the cross on the top part of the tower.

The exact origins of the church are unknown. In the early days, a small chapel was present on site. However, order for demolition was given in the 1570s. When the works started, the workman giving the first blow broke his arm. This was taken as a sign, and the chapel was saved. Pinu Gauci became the care taker, hence the name Ta’ Pinu. The church was rebuilt and works were commissioned for a construction of an altar, liturgical services, and painting. Later on, the church was further enlarged in the 1900s.

Over the years, many miracles were attributed to the grace of Our Lady Of The Assumption to whom the church was dedicated. At the back of the church, there is a vast collection of medical items from which the local people where healed off by a miracle.
