The church of St. George is found in Victoria the city of Gozo. Due to its location, the site has a vast history.

Originally, the parish was a Byzantine settlement. The original church was the main Roman Pagan Temple. The temple stood at the site of the present church. As it originated during the Byzantine era, the liturgy kept being celebrated in Byzantine rite for many years after. The church had been rebuilt several times throughout the centuries to accommodate more people and due to heavy maintenance. The parish priest of St. George was one of the local people taken prisoners by the Ottoman invasion in the 1551.

Enlargement of the sides and naves were carried out. The roof and dome had been rebuilt. Also the facade had to be redone due to damaging from a massive earthquake. Buildings near the church had to be demolished to make space for the bigger church and the square in front. Nowadays, the church houses spectacular pieces of art and workmanship.
