San Lawrenz

san lawrence village on gozo

The small yet lovely village of San Lawrenz is found in the western side of Gozo. As the name suggests, the patron saint of the village is St Laurence.

Long ago, the village of San Lawrenz formed part of the neighborhood of Għarb, however today it is a distinct village which retained its traditional and rural lifestyle. A walk across the village and its rural pathways can be one of the best walks you can have around the island of Gozo.

On the outskirts of San Lawrenz, one can also find a crafts village, offering various local artisan items.

Dwejra

Dwejra is a natural site in the limits of San Lawrenz. One can enjoy a swim in the deep sea at bay or perhaps in the calm shallow waters of the inland sea or around the Blue Hole. The Blue Hole is also one of Gozo’s most popular diving sites, where one can also see the remains of the Azure Window under the Mediterranean waters.

The Azure Window was a very popular natural window at Dwejra. It was formed through a natural formation but collapsed on 8th March 2017, when the pillar was broken in a rough windstorm, resulting in the collapse.

In Dwejra, one can also find Fungus Rock, known as Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral. History shows that a plant which was believed to have medicinal and healing properties used to grow on Fungus Rock. Due to this, it is illegal to climb on this rock, yet it can be admired from the land very close or by a swim around it.

A watch tower is also found near Fungus Rock, which can be visited almost everyday. If a flag is flying over it, then it is open for public visitors.
