Saint Publius Chapel

The Roman Catholic chapel of Saint Publius is probably the most disguised chapel on the island. It is likely that you will walk past it and do not recognize that it is a worship place.

Bare of any decorative craftsmanship, and being the same size of the nearby buildings, it camouflages itself with the residential houses. Although located in the village of Ghasri, it is administered by the neighboring village Gharb.

The original chapel was dedicated to Saint Leonard. Construction started in the 1550s, and included an adjacent cemetery. The whole site was demolished about a hundred years later.

The present chapel was built in the 1850s. It was financed by the rector of the neighboring sanctuary Ta’ Pinu. The new chapel was dedicated to Saint Publius.

The interior include a marble altar and a painting of Saint Publius. Other works of art are present in the chapel. Nowadays the chapel is no longer in regular use.
