The Rotunda of St. John is situated in the village of Xewkija near the center of the island. This particular church is a distinctive landmark. It is the largest church on the island with a height of 246 feet. This makes it visible from most of the island and parts of Malta.

The impressive dome is quite unique. The almost perfect circular dome is the world’s third highest unsupported dome. The renowned craftsmanship in limestone also reflects in the interior of the building. The walls are decorated with fine sculpture and modern art.

Before the present church, another church occupied the site. The original church had been rebuilt twice because of the growing population. In 1952 the foundations were laid for the construction of the Rotunda.

The old church was maintained intact during the construction period so as the parishioners had a place of worship. When the Rotunda was finally completed, the old church was carefully dismantled. The best sculptures were saved and today populate the Sculpture Museum adjacent to the church.

You can also visit the dome and enjoy the spectacular views. Visiting in mid June, will give you an opportunity to see the church and the surrounding streets decorated for the village feast of St. John the Baptist.
