Qolla l-Bajda Battery

a coastal battery with salt pans around it

Il-Qolla l-Bajda Battery got its name for the white hillock that is adjacent to the building. The battery is found over the coast near Xwejni bay with a number of unused salt pans around it.

This battery is one of the only two remaining batteries on Gozo. The other batteries were dismantled or got dilapidated over time. Also, Il-Qolla l-Bajda Battery was part of a group of four northerly fortifications which guarded and protected the entrance of Marsalforn bay. Nowadays, it is the only one still standing. These fortifications were part of the Coastal Fortification Project which were built in the early 1700s by the Order of St. John.

The locals refer to this battery as “Ir-Rook”. This is because in the 1970s a private individual took control of the building and changed it into a discotheque. To suit the new usage, the building design was changed and damages to the original layout were made. Nowadays, the building is abandoned, vandalized and in a very poor state.

Originally, the building had a semi circular platform facing the coast with four 6 ponder guns ready to fire. At the back, two block houses with musket loopholes prevented any take over attempts from land.
