Also known as Al Fresco Lunch, a picnic usually gets couples and friends together. The family friendly activity helps you to be at one with mother nature. The island of Gozo offers many locations where to set a picnic and enjoy the tranquility and peace of nature.
Where to picnic in Gozo?
Most beaches are an excellent choice to prepare a picnic and gather some friends. The famous Ramla beach with its reddish dunes and Xwejni bay next to the Salt Pans offer a sandy area where to lay down, relax, and enjoy lunch or dinner after a refreshing swim. Mgarr ix-Xini and Hondoq Bay are good options as well providing virgin natural scenery.
Climb the hill and explore Ta’ Gordan Lighthouse, the only lighthouse on Gozo. Perched high up on a hill edge, this location offers unobstructed views. It is easy to find some flat ground where to place a large sheet to sit on.
* Ghadira ta' San Raflu

The Ghadira ta’ San Raflu is the only natural pond on the island. Despite its petite size, the fresh water maintian a life line for some insects and animals during the hot summer days. Fresh water fish, water turtles, and ducks have become permanents residents of the area. Adjacent, you will find tables and chairs for picnic.
The valley host the iconic landmark similar to the famous Azure Window that collapsed in 2017. The window present at Wied il-Mielah is still standing strong despite the continuous weather erosion. This remote location is very quiet and peaceful. Also, it is an excellent place to view the sunset with your loved ones. Next to the landmark, large tables and benches made of stone are present for those willing to sit and picnic in the area.
Pass over the romantic Roman bridge and climb the narrow path up the hill. Picnic near Xlendi Watch Tower is stupendous. Plenty of flat space where to relax. Also, the area is far from crowds and cars, which makes it very family friendly.
Tips for Picnic
As most of the places have fixed outdoor furniture like tables and benches, there is no need to carry large blankets or towels with you. It is important to carry drinks and water with you especially during the hot days of the summer. Plan what food to take with you. During the summer months it is best to buy a local “ftira” or something similar from a local bakery and take it with you. This will save you plenty of time in preparing food. Do not be hesitant to picnic by night. Just take some romantic candles and watch the stars. I have done it a million times!!
