Our Lady of Lourdes chapel

The chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes sits on a high promontory over Mgarr Harbor. Its high rise location makes it quite visible from afar. You will surely notice the chapel from the ferry even before docking in Gozo.

As the building is close to the harbor, it is visited by many tourists, especially those traveling by foot. The construction started in the late 1800s. A statue of the Virgin Mary is found in a rock cavity under the promontory.

The building has a Gothic design with a high pitched roof, and lance windows. The bell tower at the back of the chapel has a set of 5 bells, with a clock on each side of the tower. The interior is quite small and it is mainly dominated by the statue of the Virgin Mary in the Middle.

Many flock to the chapel to hear the daily mass. It is common to find people outside of the chapel near the main door as the inside would be full. Next to the chapel, one finds Pope John XXIII afforestation garden. The public space occupies a vast area where over 2300 new trees were planted.
