Operas in Gozo

opera in gozo

Dating back from the early 1600s, opera is a form of a theatre performance. In opera, music is a cardinal element where the dramatic roles are taken by the singers.

In Gozo, there are two opera houses, namely the Astra Opera House and the Aurora Opera House. Located just about 200 meters from each other, they are rivals to one another, which rivalry helps them to put up the best production possible, as they each want to be better than the other.

The first opera held in Gozo was Puccini’s Madama Butterfly by the Aurora Opera House on 7th and 8th January 1977. Soon after, on 15th and 16th September 1978 the Astra Opera House produced Verdi’s Rigoletto. This has now become a yearly tradition, where two operas are produced each year by these operas houses.
