Local Dishes

fried rabbit, gozo traditional food, fenek moqli

You will find an array of local dishes to try while visiting Gozo. The locals love food and the palate has evolved keeping the original authenticity of food.

Most of the food consumed is sourced locally from the island and the surrounding sea. So if you would like to try something typical Mediterranean, Gozo is the place where to enjoy gastronomy at its best.

The dishes listed below are local and come with little or no meat. Some of them can be amended to be served for a vegetarian diet.

Qaqocc mimli means stuffed artichokes. This is a traditional dish which is not very common today. Funnily enough, you do not really eat the artichokes but simply skim the interior of the leaves.

The ravioli option is passed to the Maltese archipelago from neighboring Italy. What makes the local ravioli special is that the filling is done with local goat cheese.

Ross il-Forn also known as Baked Rice, is a common dish in the Gozitan household. This is an option for all those willing to live like the locals for a couple of days.

Similar to the Ross il-Forn, Mqarrun stands for Baked Pasta. This dish includes local tomato sauce and minced meat. This food option is still very alive nowadays and can be also served at room temperature.

The local way to do Timpana is like preparing the Mqarrun, but the pasta is covered with dough. This keeps the pasta and sauce soft and juicy. You can try this from most of the local bakeries
