The name Il-Qolla l-Bajda derives from the appearance of this landmark. “Qolla” means hillock, while l-Bajda mean white.

Il-Qolla l-Bajda is one of the hillocks of Gozo. Hillocks are small hills with an unusual shape. This one in particular has a very flat top. Made up mostly of a type of limestone, it has a distinctive white color.

The hillock is found along the northern coast of Gozo, adjacent to Il-Qolla l-Bajda Battery. Next to it is Xwejni Bay, a small pebble bay which is popular with local people to swim and to make BBQ in the late evening. Once you arrive in the area, parking is not a problem and you can visit the salt pans which are just a minute away.

As the myth narrates, the white hillock is one of three hillocks which before becoming a hillock were three beautiful young ladies.

Climbing the hillock is no expert feat. The best approach is from the south facing side. As the limestone of the hillock is pretty fragile, you should be careful. Once over the summit, enjoy your moment of conquest and take some photos 🙂
