Gozo Olives and Capers

gozo olives and local capers, kappar

The local sub tropical Mediterranean climate provides an excellent ambient for the growing of olive trees and wild capers. These arid trees and plants need minimum water and high sunshine.

You will find small orchards of olive trees scattered here and there around the island. Olives are harvested once a year. It is good to know that the native local olive is small in size with a big bone. Hence there is not much “meat” to eat. However, this is excellent for olive oil production. In fact you will find plenty local olive oil to enjoy with bread and dinner dishes.

The wild capers are very tasty. The plants are found in rocky areas with little soil. The locals hand pick the capers in around May and bath them in water mixed with salt. Preservation is done in glass jars filled with water and vinegar.
