Ghasri

ghasri village on gozo

Located on the island’s northwestern part, Ghasri is Gozo’s smallest village. Its name has an Arab origin, which means to press. It is believed that long ago, this area was the place where they used to press olives to make olive oil, hence the name of the village.

The village’s parish church, found in the pjazza, is dedicated to Christ the Saviour.

Ta’ Gurdan Lighthouse

Ta’ Gurdan lighthouse is situated on top of Ta’ Gurdan hill and is Gozo’s only lighthouse. From this hill, one can enjoy panoramic views of the island of Gozo and the seacoast.

The lighthouse was built in 1851, when the islands were under the British rule, to meet the need of the maritime traffic which was always increasing. Originally, it worked with oil lamps which were set on each side of the lighthouse tower. In addition to a system of large lenses, it also had reflectors to make the beam visible even from further distances. Although today the marine traffic makes use of electronic systems such as the GPS to navigate their way, the lighthouse is still operational today and functions automatically rather than being man-powered.

Wied l-Ghasri

Wied l-Ghasri, located north of the village of Ghasri, is a valley which from between high cliffs leads to the open sea, making it a great spot for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving all alike. If you do not feel like dipping into the Mediterranean waters, you can still enjoy the area which offers amazing countryside walks and wonderful areas for cycling. In Wied l-Ghasri, there is an old chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary which is also worth a visit.
