Ftira tas-Sardin

ftira tas-sardine gozo

The local ftira is the Maltese version of the Italian pizza. However, there are some differences. The dough making the ftira does not contain yeast, so it remains flatter and gets harder.

You will find two versions of the local traditional ftira. One of them is the Ftira tas-Sardin. Similar to the Ftira tal-Gobon (Cheese ftira), it will not contain any sauce or mozzarella over the dough.

The Sardine’s Ftira has a strong taste and is a full filling lunch. It is common that two people share one ftira between the two of them. Found from most local bakeries, sometimes you have to pre-order it, as the local ftira is very popular.

This Gozitan specialty usually includes potatoes, onions, capers, olives, tomatoes and sardines. There may be slight variations between bakeries, however the ultimate result is always delicious.
