Comino Island
As Comino is between the two main islands, pirates used to hide along its shores. When a trade ship used to pass by, they would loot the ship. Today, Comino’s shores are still very busy, but with visitors that go to see the island.Â
The island has very few buildings, hence most of the land is still in its natural form. The most famous place is the Blue Lagoon, situated between Comino and Cominotto. The crystal clear turquoise waters are extraordinary that movies were also filmed there.Â
The Blue Lagoon is very popular and will be very crowded. Boat trips depart every hour from the harbor. If possible try to catch the early 8am trip, so as to arrive before the big crowds start to land on the island. Have the boat ticket in hand will help you to skip the queue.Â
However, the Blue Lagoon is not the only place to visit on the island. Other places to visit on Comino are as follows:
Santa Marija Bay
Northern Cliff
Santa Marija Battery
A low profile battery found on the East side of the island. Still armed with heavy cannons, the building used to defend the sea between Comino and Malta.Â
Build around 1600s to protect the island and attack pirate boats. The fortress will be open during the summer month for visitors. Being the only high building on the island, you can enjoy superb views from the roof.Â
Crystal Lagoon
Just 5 minutes away from the Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon provides a quiet and relaxing location. However, do mind the boats that pass frequently close to the shore.Â
Although the island is quite small, do plan a whole day on Comino. Do not rush your visit, and enjoy every moment of it. It is good to take a swim suit and towel, and plenty of water. If you plan to hike the island, you need proper shoes, and sun lotion as there is no shelter from the striking sun. Also, store your bags at a luggage store on Gozo, as the paths on Comino are pretty rough and not good to pull your luggage behind you.Â
