Calypso Cave, situated in Xagħra, overlooks the most famous beach of Gozo – ir-Ramla l-Ħamra, which retains Gozo’s only sand dunes which offer a home to certain insects and wild plants.

This cave was also mentioned in part of the Homer’s Greek Mythology, the Odessy, where the nymph Calypso kept Odysseus in the cave for 7 years. Another myth goes on to say that this cave travels underneath the surface and finishes somewhere in Marsalforn area. Nowadays, the cave is closed for public due to geological movements, making it dangerous to visit. However, the area is still worth a visit to enjoy the magnificent views of ir-Ramla l-Ħamra and the surrounding nature.

Connecting Calypso Cave and Ramla l-Ħamra there is small passageway from the fields, which is only accessible by foot. Upon arriving at the beach, on the left-hand side, one can see and admire the ruins of a fortification built by the Knights of Malta in the 1750s to defend the entrance of the dale from the invading forces. On the right hand side, there are the remains of a Roman Villa which was built during the Roman Empire to serve for recreational purposes as a summer house.
