Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul

Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul

The Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul is found in the center of the hill top village of Nadur. The parish was established in the 1600s and has been growing ever since.

The church is one of the most beautiful on the island of Gozo. A visit to this piece of art is a must. Also, the interior of the building has its own particular beauty, especially the marble bolivars.

Due to the growing population, the church needed to be enlarged in order to a accommodate more people. A program took place to construct the aisles, the dome, and facade as are of the present church. The designs were based on the Italian Renaissance designs of Professor Sciortino. The works were directed by the Arch-priest of the time Martin Camilleri who lived close to the church, where today one finds Il-Barrag Farmhouse B&B.

The Basilica is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paulin honour of whom a celebration takes place on the 29th of June. The same date is also a public holiday in the country. Marches go through the narrow streets around the village. It is one of the most attended feasts on Gozo.
