As my grandfather used to say “…you can not have it all…”. The island is rich in history and culture, but lacks natural resources, which are only a few. So, since the early time the local people learned to do their best in getting the most of what is available.

The second most abundant resource is the Carolina limestone, which is much denser and stronger than its counterpart. Found in the east of Gozo, one needs specialized tools to extract the rock. Today it is used to produce sand and gravel for construction.

Water, as an essential resource was always limited. It was common practice to develop a well near a house or an agricultural field to collect rain water. In designated areas, it was possible to find water underground. This was done by digging a vertical shaft and develop a spring water source. The water that pours out of the rock is of excellent quality.
