The European Health Insurance Card is a policy for free or reduced emergency cost or medical treatment in public hospitals. It is available to all EU citizens. The card is valid and operational in Malta and Gozo’s public hospital. I would highly recommend that anyone who can get an EHIC card, does so.Â
As EHIC covers only basic treatment in state health centers in Gozo, it is advisable to get a private medical insurance. Different insurance companies offer different rates and coverage. Most of them are at reasonable prices and are surely worth the small extra cost so as to travel with a rested mind. Local insurance companies have great deals and I can recommend them from experience. Also, having the insurance company locally may help reduce the bureaucracy and paper work in case of need.Â
You also have the option to visit private health centers. As the public clinic may be crowded, private clinics are a good choice.
