Natural Places

Lunzjata valley which is one of the nicest valleys in Gozo, is found on your way to Kerċem, on the left upon entering the village from Victoria – Gozo’s capital. This valley offers a picturesque view of agricultural fields as well as running fresh water which is put to use in the agricultural fields. Upon entering the valley, there is a beautiful arch guarding the valley and a chapel which dates back to the 1300s.

Għar Ilma is a small hill located in the outskirts of Kerċem. Its name comes from the fact that way back in the history of Gozo, natural spring water was found on this hill. Later on, the aqueducts were built from Għar Ilma to the Citadel to supply the latter with water.

In Christmas time, a Christmas tree is set on the side of the hill to decorate the area. It is the biggest tree put up in Gozo, making it possible to be seen from many different places across Gozo.

L-Għadira ta’ San Rafflu overlooks an amazing view of Dwejra, Xlendi as well as parts of Malta and the island of Filfla – found in the south of Malta. In this area, one can enjoy lovely coastal walks, which can even lead to Dwejra through an area where there are quarries. The name l-Għadira ta’ San Rafflu derives from the fact that there is a small lake which used to have ducks in it. Nowadays one can find turtles in this lake. Right next to it, there is also a lovely picnic area, where one can sit and enjoy a picnic whilst relaxing in this lovely area.

Archaeological discoveries

In the village of Kerċem there were some archaeological discoveries from 7000 years ago, which suggest that this village was one of the earliest places to be inhabited in Gozo. Such discoveries include tombs which were found right next to the parish church.
