a sign showing direction of myth and fact

The island of Gozo has two strange hillocks. These are the White Hillock and the Yellow Hillock found to the north of the island. Their names were derived from their particular shapes and distinctive color.

A local myth narrates that many years ago, a witch used to dwell in the area of Marsalforn valley. Three young ladies were enslaved to work for her. One day the ladies fell in love with three gentlemen. Despite their continuous emotional pleas, the witch refused to let them go.

One night, the girls escaped from their room while the gentlemen awaited them on a boat at Xwejni Bay. However, their joy of freedom was shortly lived. The evil witch noticed their absence and furiously followed the three ladies.

Blinded by her wickedness, the witch casted a spell to turn the ladies into hillocks. The first one would be the Yellow Hillock. The second lady turned into the White Hillock just as she was approaching the bay. Luckily the third one managed to board the boat and escape.

Another local myth is that of Calypso cave, also mentioned in ancient Greek mythology.
