Sanap Cliffs

a sharp cliff edge

Sanap cliffs are found in the South of Gozo. Also known by the locals as Ta’ Cenc Cliffs, these cliffs form the southern coastal cliff line of Gozo.

The passage along the cliff can be easily accessed from different points. It forms part of the Southern Trekking Route. Depending on how much you are willing to walk, you can start your hike from Mgarr Harbour. Other access points are from Munxar or Sannat village. There is a small car park from which you can continue on foot.

Sanap area contains small archaeological ruins dating back to the Megalithic Era. It is common to see a dolmen, or other ancient stone made artifact. Mramma temple is also close by. Due to its location and wild vegetation, it was identified as an important breeding and nestling ground for birds. During the migration season you will notice large birds near the precipice.

On some parts of the route, the path is narrow and uneven. It is important to look out where to place your foot. However, no professional training is required. As the route passes close to the cliff edge, it is important to supervise children. I would not advice to wonder outside the official trekking route.

Walking further to the West, you will see Xlendi watch tower in front of you. This is an excellent location to rest and enjoy the sunset. As I like this tranquil location, there is a chance that you will meet me there. Crossing over the ancient bridge, you will find yourself in Xlendi where you an get snacks, ice creams, and other refreshments.
