Mixta Cave is a natural rock formation found in the northern coast of Gozo. This particular cave had a defensive usage in the past. Also, today it is easy accessible to visit.

Tal-Mixta Cave can be found along the North Trekking Route as it is very close to the coast. Also, you can reach it by walk from Nadur village.  The entrance of the cave is carved in the rock from the back and is very narrow. Found on the right hand side of Ramla bay, it is opposite to Calypso Cave. The latter is located on the left hand side of the famous red beach.

Years ago cannons where installed in the cave. Small holes where dug into the walls so as to place the front of the cannons out. This was done in order to defend the bay from pirate ships. As the opening of the cave faces inland towards the bay, it was difficult for the attacking ship to spot the cannons.

A legend about Mixta Cave tells a story that happened when the French forces attacked Malta and Gozo. The attack was carried out under the command of Napoleon the Great. The local people hid some cannons in the cave and covered them. This was done so that the French soldiers do not steal the cannons. Legend goes on to say that the local people forgot about the cannons, and where found by mistake many years later. These are now exhibit in the Citadel of Gozo.
