Salvatur Hill

The Salvatur Hill is found on the northern part of Gozo. The shape of this landmark resembles the hillocks found near the coast. However, there are some differences.

Also known as “Tal-Merzuq” by the locals, the shape of this hill is like that of a volcano. A local myth tells the story that people used to see fire at night coming from the top of hill. However, this was never seen or proven during the day.

Years ago a statue of a Gozitan Bishop was  built on site. Unfortunately, this did not survive long as it was struck by lighting during a storm. The imposing figure was shuttered in pieces in the fields below. Parts of the original statue is still lying on the summit. A bigger statue replaced the former one.

Situated in the country side around fertile land, the agricultural fields produce a variety of local vegetables. You may be having some of these products for dinner. The hill is accessible from the main road leading to Marsalforn. It is a very lovely walk up the hill which I have done over a hundred times. The passage gets a bit tricky and difficult near the summit. However, it is worth the effort to enjoy the splendid views.

Hike Hint:

toasted bread with tomatoes, onions and capers

I always take a packed lunch with me to eat at the foot of the statue. Try something local like bread with olives, capes, and tomatoes.
