Our Lady of Loreto

church dedicated to Loreto in Gozo

The church dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto is located in the village of Ghajnsielem on the East side of Gozo. Ghajnsielem is the first village one finds when arriving on Gozo. It overlooks Mgarr where one finds the Ferry port, the main connection between Malta and Gozo.

Like many other villages, Ghajnsielem grew in population and the old church could not cope with the increase in worshipers. The current church was designed in Gothic style and took several years to be completed. Several delays and accidents helped to push the finish date back. The Second World War also caused temporary interruptions. Other associated accidents include the episode when the Master mason broke both his legs, and the death of the architect in charge.

a towering church on the island of gozo

The design of this church is very particular. It is very different from the other churches found on Gozo. The narrow towering bell is found in the middle of the facade. This eye-catching detail is very particular. The local people nicknamed the church “The Rocket” because of the bell tower.

The feast is celebrated at the end of August. A party like activity is common and usually involves a lot of alcohol consumption by the participating individuals.
